Guard Your Thoughts - Achieve Your Goals

Many resolutions for positive change are made each year, but negative beliefs can derail the plans if tools are not implemented to guard against them.
At the beginning of the new year, many people made resolutions – revisited old dreams, planned new strategies and hope for new beginnings. Hope for positive change, even exceeding the expectations.
Hope is wonderful. When you feel hope, you know that it is present in your life. It is exciting, inspiring and can give you momentum to keep moving forward. Hope can pull you out of darkness and into light. Hope, however, without a deep faith, can be easily shattered by fear.
There are external, scary things going on around us in the world that we should be afraid of and guard ourselves against. We can have internal things that can be just as scary. These demons show up when we start to stretch out of our comfort zones and are not just due to our actions. Thoughts and feelings can be so fear inducing that they can become paralyzing. If they are continually listened to, they can take hold of you and hope can begin to fade – light becomes darkness again.
While these internal demons are ‘just’ thoughts, they can be as, or more, scary than the external ones. When they happen, they can feel as if you have been hit by a shock and become paralyzing. It turns out that it’s not what you think it is though. We have reactions not to what they are, but what we think they are, but they can feel as if they could threaten our very survival.
What are the thoughts that could be so threatening? – “What if I fail?” “I can’t do that because … “ “What if they laugh at me?” “I’m not smart enough to do this.” These gremlins can grab hold of you if you let them and will hold you back from moving forward and living your dreams.
By learning tools to help us keep from giving these thoughts attention and making them grow, we can learn to live positive, stress-free lives. Meditation, breathing techniques and exercise are several of the tools that many use – there are others. Visualization is useful as well. Learning to integrate these into our daily lives will guard us from those thoughts becoming demons that can limit the enjoyment we want to achieve.
