Is it worth taking all the risk, challenging the status quo, being more vulnerable, going the extra mile, and letting go for a purposeful life?
Living a life of purpose is not an easy and neither do a life being unconscious of your purpose, as Eban Pagan quotes “It’s hard to live life the easy way and easy to live life the hard way” Living a life of purpose sometime require you to take risks, challenge the status quo, and be more vulnerable. Nevertheless, it’s all worth it if you are the person who wants to live to his or her fullest potential and contribute. I am here sharing with you my 5 favorite reasons why a life of purpose is worth it
1) You will feel not only happy but also fulfilled
Most search for happiness, what I mean by happiness is those good spikes of emotions you feel on occasions. Like when you are out with friends and having fun, receiving news about a promotion or maybe when you get a crush to text you back to go on a date with you. Those all are great emotions and events but what happens maybe couple of days after, you’re back to what you were feeling in the first place. Fulfilment is different, to me fulfilment is a place of being happy, content and joyful on a long period of time, maybe you have felt it or got a glimpse of it when you knew you made a difference, or in a moment you were out in nature and you felt so present and appreciative of its beauty, or when you have done unconditional act of giving, or a moment of connection you had with God, or a magical time with a loved one. These moments not only make us feel happy but enrich us long after the experience, making us know that life is worth while. This is fulfilment :-).
2) Surrounding yourself with awesome people
Once you take the path of purpose you will find you are not alone on this path. Many people believe what you believe, it’s just a matter of reaching out to one another. And once you connect with those people whom are on the same path as you, you will create a strong connection with people you resonate with. How do I guarantee you that? Well, people whom are on the same path as you will share a lot of your values. People who share similar values as us will have shared interests, shared way of looking at life and similar struggles. Having a lot in common will allow you to create deeper relation with people whom you find awesome.
3) Discover your uniqueness. Zero Competition.
How many times you have been in business and felt like what you provide is a commodity. Being in business where we feel that what we are providing is same to our competitor can put us in a diminishing perspective which is “I am same to someone else so I am not unique”. Even biologically it’s not true, we are all same same but different ;-). We are all similar but unique. No two people have the same DNA or finger print. Accordingly, what we all contribute has the potential to be unique when it comes from our values, life purpose, past struggles, our teams and our aspirations. No one will have these ingredients same, thus the end result will always be unique. Even if others try to copy you they will eventually fail. Apple is a good example. So many IT companies tried to copy Apple’s success but failed as these competing companies did not produce products based on Apple values of Zen, Simplicity, challenging the status quo and innovation and nevertheless they can’t produce product based on apple values and vision cause it’s not theirs.
So stop spending too much time on what your competition is doing. If you find what you are doing is same as them, it’s a clue for you to look deeper inside.
4) You will feel Alive and be more Alive
Take couple of seconds to imagine a fruitful apple tree and imagine another next to it that is fruitless. Beside the fact that the first had apples and the other no apples, what was different in your imagination between one and the other? I would bet that the fruitful one looked more alive. The fruitful contributing tree will be more alive while the tree that is fruitless will almost seem lifeless. And this is true with humans, the more of what we do comes from a place of purpose, contribution and fruitfulness which will feed others the way the apple tree feed other animals the more alive we will be. And the Aliveness feeling that I am referring to here is distinct from the fulfilment which I mentioned earlier. The Aliveness that I am relating to here is having a zest for life, a sense of growth, liveliness and inner richness. A scientific research done by Psychology Science on 7000 American found that people whom have a sense of purpose lived longer than their counter parts. So not only you will be adding life to your years but also there is a great chance you will be adding years to your life.
5) You will be more consistent and committed.
How many times you have started something and stopped, I know I have. All my projects in the past which I did either for money, fame or to “look good” did not move so far or did not continue. They did not have enough passion, enough meaning. Once that I found it was too difficult, too time consuming, got embarrassed or felt that I failed I stopped. In order to continue in the face of difficulty and major challenges you need to have a “big enough” of a reason. Past generations and even a lot people today struggles are survival, security and getting the recognition of feeling good enough. While the need of survival is very biological and real in face of threat or hunger, security and good enough is more psychological. Some people have more money to spend in their life time but they don’t feel secure and some achieve so much fame and titles yet they don’t feel good enough. Survival, security and recognition can be a big enough WHY but for people whom feel Secure and have intrinsic sense of feeling good enough what would be a big enough WHY. I don’t see any other WHY than fulfilling ones core values, being passionate on what one is doing and have it provide a sense of meaning. And this is what will keep us committed despite challenges, judgment and shortcomings.
