Taking time off is necessary to be the most effective leader just ask Bill Gates who takes two weeks in the year to disconnect from the world, reset his goals and rejuvenate his big ideas. He comes out of the time with a new life to do list. Recently, I took my own think time to allow for some space to reflect and gain a fresh perspective on my business, efficiency of my time, and ultimate life purpose. I was inspired by a conference I attended where Robin Sharma talked about how great leaders need the space to be creative. I now return with a renewed sense of purpose and passion. Designing time off is very personal. I prefer traveling, journaling, and connecting with loved ones. What you do with the time off depends on your own set of values. Here are a few things that helped me design my think time:
What inspires you? It is important to feel inspired by your time off. If traveling sounds exhausting then explore your own city. Whatever you decide to do with your time off make sure it inspires you.
Learn something new. This time is for you to develop and become a more avid thinker in this world. Understand where you will be completely open to a new experience. Perhaps you have a family. Explore through the eyes of your children and see what you find. Try to have a beginner’s mindset and absorb as much as you can.
Measure the value of what you are doing versus the cost- Robin Sharma mentioned that when Warren Buffet looks at spending money he looks at what the investment is and what value it holds for him versus the cost. Basically, the value of what you are doing is more important than what it costs. Once you identify what your inspirational think time looks like, you will find a way to make it work out!
Enjoy!
