I use a tool with clients that explores their leadership effectiveness. The tool explores their reaction tendency in stressful situations, natural strengths and triggers that create negative emotions. It is a fascinating process as clients realize how and what weighs down on them and in turn makes them inefficient. I want to share how to start this process so you too can understand what triggers you.
To start this process think of your life story and answer the following:
1) What is your first memory of your childhood. Your mother, father, brother, or sister? What is unique and memorable? What was a common situation or topic that stressed you out and would reoccur during this time. Please keep in mind that your gut answer is most correct and if you don’t remember reflect on why.
2) What about your memory of leaving home, how was this transition? What do you remember about yourself during this time? What was a major obstacle? What was a pivotal turning point during this transition?
3) What got you to the point you are in your life right now? What is most memorable about this time? How do you feel about where you are today? How has your past affected your present situation?
4) Now think of a recent situation that made you stressed. First look at how you reacted in this situation (not others). How has your life story impacted your reaction in this stressful situation? Try to look for a common theme in your reaction to this stress.
This is just the beginning of this process. If you are interested in further understanding and sorting through your stressed out reactions in situations to become a more effective leader let’s chat!
