My 6 best tips to beat bad habits this year!
It’s 2016. If you’re aiming at perfection (in your own definition) for this year, you’ve got it right! Any of the 6 following tips will help you tremendously to achieve getting rid of old patterns and implementing positive new habits that you have chosen and designed to guide yourself through life effortlessly! Bye bye cigarettes, pornography, sugar and unhealthy relationships (and even animal products for me) and welcome patterns generating a healthy, abundant, successful lifestyle! Here we go:
- Find a buddy
Implementing a new habit is so hard! Find a friend and make it a game. Check on each other every day to make sure each of you haven’t broken “the contract”. Support each other when temptation is hard to resist or brag about how easy last week was. On top of that, when you succeed you’ll be two happy people instead of one!
- Change your vocabulary
Condemn what you are trying to quit and glorify your goal. When I was fighting my sugar addiction, I wasn’t saying ‘sugar’ or ‘junk food’. I was saying ‘poison’. This technique works fantastically, especially if you do it ALL THE TIME, even during social gatherings. “Hey do you want some coke? No thanks, I’m stopping eating poison.” You can try to play it cool and say “Hmmm I really feel like buying some poison right now”, but deep down in you you know that it’s a big fail if you crack and you won’t do it. And you’ll be right. Next.
- Do it for a greater purpose
I became vegan in one day after I saw the movie Earthlings. I was already vegetarian, but seeing this documentary made me want to become vegan. Fact is, I wasn’t doing this to improve my diet or lose a few kilos. I was dong it to save millions of animals who suffer for no reason. Whatever you are trying to stop, find something. Boycott cigarettes because they are a national health issue. Stop being late at work because your team needs you! Make a point in not watching pornography because of the millions of dollars that are made on the back of over-exploited young women. This way you will feel that the change is effortless, it is just too painful to think about what you are contributing to.
- You deserve better
It sure is tempting to eat some more ice-cream in front of the TV but really, don’t you deserve the body you deserve?! Would you rather keep smoking outside the restaurant when it’s cold or shout out of your healthy lungs how beautiful life is. You can watch more porn and enjoy solitary confinement but really, don’t you deserve that it is time you get an actual sex life at the height of your expectations? The reason why you want to stop your old pattern and take good habits is because you know it will lead you to a greater version of yourself. You are right, and you deserve it.
- Be kind to yourself
You cannot go from black to white in one go. If temptation becomes irresistible, just allow yourself to go back to your old pattern once in a while. If you do it by accepting that it is to release a tension, then you understand than feeding this old pattern will keep your awesome self going for days before you have to satisfy that urge again. Don’t use this as an excuse, but in seven words, IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A FIGHT.
- Think outcome oriented, not syndrome oriented
If you want to stop smoking and you’re saying to yourself “I won’t smoke. I will not smoke a cigarette. I will not enjoy a nicotine rush.” How is that going to work for you? Not. That’s how it’s going to work. The unconscious mind (who you are trying to bypass in this work) cannot hear negation. If you say “I’m cool I won’t eat ice-cream”, all you’ve heard is “I – eat – ice-cream”. Instead, just say to yourself “Let’s beat that 30 day challenge today and read that interesting passage of Thus Spoke Zarathustra on the treadmill at speed 6 while eating some graded celery with tamari sauce”. That’s right, go crazy with the sauce, it’s so good. And don’t drop sauce on your book. No cigarette. No ice cream. Just muscles, empowerment and great literature. (I haven’t read the book)
Try any of a combination of these tips and your progression on your work on self will skyrocket, success guaranteed!
Best,
Dimitri
