When to, and not to use positive affirmations

Positive affirmations are the classics of personal development. In recent times however newer methods were developed that work far, far better.
Positive affirmations are rooted so deep in positive psychology that everyone has heard of them. While there are cases when they are useful, other times newer methods work staggeringly better.
Last year I attended a Tony Robbins seminar. At the end of the first day all the 6,500 participants were taught how to walk barefoot over a bed of burning hot coals. This was used to show us that “If you can walk on fire, what CAN’T you do??”. It took about an hour to explain how to do it and to prepare us fully for the experience. One of the things Tony specifically instructed us to do is, as we walk on the coals, to say over and over again “cool moss, cool moss, cool moss” in order to jam out the inner voice that might say “OH SHIT! I’M GONNA TRIP AND BURN ALIVE WITH THE FIZZLING FLESH FALLING OFF MY FACE WASTING AWAY….” you get the point.
It worked very well, I barely felt a bit of warmth.
At another one of his seminars, a business one this time we did an incantation to get in an energised state before setting goals:
I AM A GLADIATOR!
I AM A GLADIATOR!
WINTER IS MY SEASON!
THIS IS MY TIME!
I WILL NOT BE DENIED!
GIVE ME YOUR FEARS, GIVE ME YOUR LIMITS, I GIVE YOU RESULTS!
I ADD VALUE AND FIND A WAY TO VICTORY!
After you absolutely SCREAM these words together with another 1,000 people for a couple of minutes you do feel quite vibrant. Again it worked very well.
What I’m getting at is that positive affirmations work great if you want a quick state change, they are not too efficient at deeper work such as a belief change like “I can’t do it” or “I’m not good enough”.
Tad James is a Master Trainer of NLP (the highest distinction in the field) for 30 years now, and at the beginning of his career he did some affirmations to recondition his mind. One of them was “everything and everybody prospers me now and I prosper them”. Sounds good right? Well he kept saying that over and over for 2 years until it really got into his head.
Now we could do that in 10 minutes with NLP.
The reason for it is that when doing affirmations you affect mostly the conscious mind. Change occurs at the subconscious level, which what NLP works with. You hire a life coach to get you to excellence, fast. What you could do in 6 months with a traditional psychotherapist you can do in just days with a coach.
