How to get the most out of your coaching sessions

Coaching is another tool in your toolbox of resources that you choose to help you be successful and live a purposeful life and a life you love.
Many people hire a coach thinking that the coach will be able to give them answers to what they should do next. In reality, it is best to develop a relationship with a coach as a “mentor” or “trusted advisor.” Your coach should be someone who will be honest with you, respect your ideas, encourage you and give you feedback. A coach can help you clarify your goals, put action steps in place to achieve them and hold your accountable.
Always come to your coaching session prepared and honor the time commitment that you have made. A successful coaching session is when you feel like you have had a shift in your thinking about a particular objective. It is the “aha” moment that spurs you into action.
To develop a good rapport with a coach is critical to a successful outcome. A coach will help you adhere to timelines that you create and collaborate with you on brainstorming ideas and next steps.
It is always good to have a beginning, a middle and an end to each coaching session. This way the conversation can be focused and your next steps are clear. Some coaches use a session agenda to accomplish this. It varies depending on the coach and the individual. The best results from coaching are those when both parties are engaged; ideas are flowing freely and you feel inspired to move forward.
There is no set time or number of sessions that is best for everyone. You need to determine how often you want to meet with your coach to keep on track to achieve the objectives you outlined for yourself at the outset.
