Together, we devise a plan for how the client can achieve their goals with a minimum of acrimony.
Divorce coaches help clients to stay focused on achieving positive results. Tensions in a messy divorce can escalate out of control. Even in a typical divorce, the stress can be intense for both clients and lawyers. Also, as more and more divorces take the form of collaborative processes, clients bear a greater level of responsibility for negotiating well.
Enter the divorce coach, a member of the legal team who helps clients navigate the intense emotions and legal frustrations intrinsic in divorce.
Divorce coaches help clients attain and retain a focus on bargaining effectively and achieving positive results rather than getting stuck in vindictiveness.Unlike therapists, who focus on treating symptoms, divorce coaches guide people in how to manage situations.
The first step in my divorce coaching process is to get to know the client and their case. I conduct an initial assessment to understand what led to the break-up, identify the legal issues, and to understand the factors surrounding the client’s emotions.
Next, I teach clients about the psychological effects that they and their children can expect and about practices that can help them to emerge from divorce happy and whole.
Within the coaching sessions, the client and I work together to prioritize issues. I help the client to articulate desired outcomes and we devise a plan for how the client can achieve their goals with a minimum of acrimony. I communicate with the client’s attorney to determine what will be coming up in the legal process that could be upsetting to the client, and the client and I will plan for it together. We may work together on setting goals related to upcoming events in the divorce process or script and role-play. At each stage of their journey, we’ll talk about how things went and evaluate the event within the context of the overall divorce plan.
By minimizing emotional and psychological battles, the divorce can be completed quicker with savings in hourly fees being far greater than the cost of coaching. This contributes to overall client satisfaction.
