Banish procrastination so you can move confidently towards achieving your goals.
Does this sound familiar? You already know what needs to be done. You know you need to stop procrastinating. You know you need to set goals and intelligent deadlines. You know you need to track your results and direct your energies into efforts that will bring you the greatest outcomes. You know you need to get moving however, there is a gap between that knowledge and real world action.
Lets’ take a closer look at some of the gaps that might be preventing you from moving from procrastination into action.
1) Excessive Talking. Do you remember when you first learned how to ride a bike? You learned by getting on and riding it, not by sitting around and talking about “how” to ride it. Talking about what you want to achieve doesn’t make it happen. It’s natural to want to go into a new situation armed with appropriate knowledge, but once you’ve learned the basics of a skill, start acting on it.
2) Depending on Motivation Instead of Habit. It’s OK to feel unmotivated sometimes, to hit a roadblock and you need something positive to dig you out. However, focus on forming good habits and not having to always rely on being motivated for any type of positive action in your life. Habits are things you just do. You brush your teeth whether you “feel” like it or not. If can devote one month to establishing a positive habit, chances are much better that you’ll do it for a long time to come.
3) Trying to Go From Zero to One Hundred. When you realize you’ve fallen behind on accomplishing certain tasks or goals, you may want to make up for “lost time” by trying to take on too much. This might seem like a good solution but it could actually be counterproductive for some people. While there are those that can handle this sort of dramatic shift, you’re better off to start small. Chunk your goals into smaller and more manageable actions that you can do consistently and scale up from there.
Make one choice today that will help you move from procrastination into action and tomorrow make a choice again. Keep making those choices daily to move you forward into action. Before you know it, you’ll be creating new habits and routines that will become second nature and propel you forward towards achieving your goals.
