How should we criticize without sounding like a complete jerk?
Why do we need to learn criticizing politely? Generally speaking, to have an agreeable personality and be a reasonable person. It is so easy to criticize others by hurting their feelings, coming across as rude, insensitive and stupid. This will not only damage your personal, but also your work relationships. Which are very crucial to success in your career. But we do have to criticize others from time to time. If we compromise on everything it will not only be very frustrating but we will also not be able to be an effective person. So, how should we criticize without sounding like a complete jerk?
The American Writer, Cognitive Scientist and Philosopher, Daniel Dennett shares this valuable advice with us.
How to compose a successful critical commentary:
1-You should attempt to re-express your target’s position so clearly, vividly, and fairly that your target says, “Thanks, I wish I’d thought of putting it that way.
2-You should list any points of agreement (especially if they are not matters of general or widespread agreement).
3-You should mention anything you have learned from your target.
4-Only then are you permitted to say so much as a word of rebuttal or criticism.
If you google the definition of the word Criticism, you get:
“The expression of disapproval of someone or something on the basis of perceived faults or mistakes.”
“Perceived” is a key word here. No matter how sure we are that the other person deserves to be criticized, we are looking at the situation from our own lens, and there is a probability, even if it is tiny, that we may be wrong. So, point # 1 is very important. It will help clarify the situation before you jump to any conclusions.
Do experiment, and try this approach a couple of times. It can make a world of difference in your relationships, both professional and personal.
