Tips on improving social skills.
If you are shy or introverted you may have a tough time making new friends and meeting new people.
Because of this, you may even lack some social skills and find yourself getting into awkward situations with people.
Here are a few exercises to do to increase you social skills:
The most basic is to talk to yourself in the mirror. This may seem weird, but you will be able to get an idea of how you look when you talk to people. Most people are not aware of their face when they are in a conversation with others.
Next record yourself talking. This will help you get a grasp of your tone of voice and hearing what you sound like when you talk to people.
Are you too monotone? Do you mumble? Do you speak too fast? These are things you want to work on.
The most effective way to enhance your speaking skills and become comfortable when talking to other people is to take public speaking courses. This was the most crucial and helpful activity for me.
I used to speak in a monotone voice, be unenthusiastic, nervous, and didn’t smile when I spoke.
After taking a public speaking course I dramatically improved.
Lastly, talk to other people! The more you put yourself out there the more comfortable and better you will get with talking to other people. I had a hard time making friends and was very awkward in a social setting when entering college.
Because of college, I was forced to meet more people and classes forced me to do more public speaking. Over time it became much easier for me to make friends, meet more people, and gain amazing connections with others.
Most of all my awkwardness in social settings went away.
When speaking to people make sure you smile more, speak slower, and relax!
