Do you find yourself thinking 'I hate my job'? I have been there, I know how frustrating it is. Here's how to take charge and create your exit plan.
Do you often find yourself thinking ‘I hate my job’? If you have lost your mojo at work, or no longer wake up excited about your day’s work, you are definitely not alone. I have been there; I know how frustrating it is. Unfortunately, very few people take action and make the necessary changes. Here are the three most common reasons why people stay stuck in a job they hate:
Fear of financial uncertainty: “I hate my job, but I can’t afford to quit.” Fear of the unknown: “I hate my job, but I don’t know what kind of job I want.” Fear of loss of status: “I hate my job, but at least I have a professional job and a pension plan.”The truth is that you can’t afford to stay stuck in a job you hate. Staying stuck in a career that drains you is costing you in more than one way:
First and foremost, ‘I hate my job’ poisons your relationships. Your professional life affects your personal life and vice versa. If you are unhappy at work, you can’t help but carry these frustrations home with you. Once you are engaged in your fulfilling career, you will come home inspired and happy creating a positive ripple effect on your family, relationships and friendships.
Secondly, ‘I hate my job’ costs you financially. If you are dissatisfied at work you may spend more money on ‘pick me up’ purchases. Once you find the career you love, you will feel deserving of your income and are more likely to spend it wisely. You won’t need to buy things to make you feel good about yourself, because you will already feel happy and content.
Thirdly, ‘I hate my job’ undermines your self-confidence. The more time you spend doing things that are not in line with your strengths and values the less confident you feel. On the bright side, I know from over 10 years of experience of coaching people through positive career transformations, that your sense of confidence picks up as soon as you begin to explore your strengths and values and get reconnected with what is right for you. Once you begin working in the career that is well aligned with who you are, you will naturally exude confidence.
I don’t recommend quitting your job haphazardly. However, I do recommend creating an exit plan with the following key elements:
Save for the job you love. Begin to set a monthly amount aside in a saving account. You can call this account your dream career fund. The more you put into your dream career account, the more secure you will feel about leaving your current job, when the time is right for you.
Reach out for support to find the job you love. Hire a life coach or career coach to help you identify the career that is right for you. Once you have committed to coaching, you will no longer feel stuck in your current job. As you embark on the journey to find your fulfilling career, you will begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel and feel your confidence growing.
Shift your Focus at Work. Stop focusing on ‘I hate my job‘ and take steps to make your current job more enjoyable. Focus on the aspects of your work that you enjoy, however small they may be. Find ways to inject humour into your work day. Find ways to renew your energy throughout your day, so that you feel less drained by the end of your working day. Mini-Retreats are a great way to get you started. Focus on the aspects of your life that you already enjoy. Appreciate them with a sense of gratitude.
