What do you need for a great career?

A great career is everyone's dream. And rightly so. Our jobs define almost 50% of our daily time. So it should keep us intellectually engaged
What is everyone looking for in a new career or great career? What defines great? Its very subjective & personal.
However, being a career coach for many years, interacting with professionals from many walks of career stages/industries and running a career services firm (www.flatheels.co), I have identified a few “factors” which become a part of consideration while defining “great” in career or job context.
1- It should pay (of course!) enough to pay the bills and save some
2- It should have a good boss; good enough to “keep” you in the organization
3- It should be challenging; enough to motivate you to come to work, daily
4- It should be creative; enough to trigger your right brains and create a deeper interaction within
5- It should provide you a platform to move to the next level
6- Good colleagues, culture etc. also play a huge role in keeping you at a job even when some of the other factors don’t or marginally exist
However, there’s one question which stumps almost all my clients with no immediate response. “how much of this is in your control”? Yes, #1, #3, #4 to an extent
So how do we maximize this influence so we make choices which cover the rest of the facets?
What do you need to make a great career?
I have a model which I use with my clients to help them
1- place where they stand
2- identify where they want to go
3- find the route to that success
4- define what success means
I call it: Be VFPM model
Be Visible, Be found, Be Present and Be More!
these are the 4 things you need to make a great “career” whatever field, level, function you do…
Here are a few questions, evaluate yourself on my Be VFPM model for all 4 questions above and see what you get. Its a good litmus test, to see if you are really “in touch” with your aspirations, motivations and dreams

Building your personal brand:
• Who are you as a leader, as a person?
• Why should someone hire you (and not your competition)?
• What can you do for your employer or industry or marketplace (what are you capable of)?
Building your connectivity & reach:
• How many sponsors do you have? (Sponsors are people who’ll bet on your potential blindly)
• How many mentors do you have? (Mentors are people who’ll invest their personal time in growing you without expecting a return)
• How many people can you reach out confidently if you were looking for a change, right now?
Taking your presence to the next level:
– What is your current presence management strategy?
- How do you reach people with your thoughts?
- How will you take your presence to next level? BE PRESENT!
Competence Development: What would enable you to BE MORE than what you are today? How much “more” is more for you?
