Your Soul's Desires: Trusting Life's Synchronicities

We all feel frustrated at times and may question our life paths. But there are signs along the way that clarify our direction when we listen.
“It is perfectly safe to follow the desires of the soul…it will mean the best of everything for body, mind and spirit, and the right things will appear in the right places, at the right time.”
– Christian D. Larson
Have you ever thought of someone and then saw or heard from them days or even minutes later? Have you had an idea or a vision you wanted to implement, and then an unplanned series of events led you to a piece of pertinent information or to someone who was able to help you?
Synchronicities serve as reminders that the Universe is listening. They provide us with guidance and assure us that we are, indeed, on the right path.
When my father passed in 2009, I felt a strong desire to find my roots. I had never met my paternal grandparents, who had immigrated to the U.S. from Italy, as they died before I was born. As a child, I recall having an inner longing to discover where in Italy they had come from. My father, who was born in New York, knew his parents were from somewhere in the south, in the vicinity of Naples, but didn’t have much else to go on.
I took my first trip to Italy in 2010. A 6-week adventure that both thrilled and inspired me. Although my intention was to discover the region where my grandparents were from, I never thought I would come close to finding their actual village. Through a series of synchronistic events and connections that began long before I left the U.S., I not only found my grandparents village, I learned that I qualified for Italian citizenship; an experience that far exceeded my wildest expectations.
We all have them. The niggles, the inspiration to pick up the phone, take a new route home, or stop in a store we have never been to before. Synchronicities abound. But it is up to us to pay attention, and like an ardent adventurer, and follow where they lead.
My signs included a book someone mentioned written by an author who was from the town of Matera, which sparked an interest in my visiting the village; a stranger who responded to a post I had written on a travel forum recommending a B&B in the area; the manager of the B&B, who never worked the front desk, welcoming me when I arrived, as her entire staff had been out sick for a week; her recommendation for a guide to show me around, who later told me he had an interest in genealogy, and who found my grandparents’ village.
I invite you to pay attention to the synchronicities in your life. Chance encounters, an unexpected invitation or phone call, a recommendation, a quote you read on the back of a book or on someone’s t-shirt. However they appear, take a moment to notice. Perhaps they will shed light on your path, answer a lingering question, or bring understanding and healing into a relationship or or other aspect of your life.
There are those who think of synchronicities as coincidences. However you perceive them, they are likely serving as guideposts on your path.
