What Identified Purpose Can Do For You

Clarity in who we are, what we want, and where we are going provides the required motivation to accomplish great things.
I like to think of purpose as the engine in a car. It is the heart and soul of everything we do. If purpose is clear it has the power to take us great distances and see great things.
Lack of purpose is like a car with a broken engine. In our youth, we dreamed of great things…we had purpose and our engine was running. Lack of attention, thought, and focus wear down the engine into omission. We get comfortable in our surroundings and decide to make camp. The engine stalls and eventually gives out.
What type of engine (or purpose) do you have? Is it a high functioning, powerful machine that is taking you places? Is it maintained regularly? Or, through neglect, does it stall and keep you from moving forward?
Purpose is the foundation of everything we do. Clarity in who we are, what we want, and where we are going provides the required motivation to accomplish great things. The fulfillment of our identified purpose is what will empower personal, family, and organizational greatness. Greatness is not measured by media, society or any other external group or organization. It is measured and previously defined by the individuals or groups carrying out their defined purpose.
If we, or some group or organization to which we belong, are feeling stuck, frustrated, and empty it may be time to reevaluate who we are and what we sincerely want. It has been my experience that this discovery process can be challenging but also full of excitement, hope, and light.
To overhaul means to take something apart in order to examine it and repair it if necessary. And that is exactly what I suggest we do. We need to examine our lives and see if a repair is in order. It will require us to take apart our inner desires by putting them on paper, examine how our life aligns with what we want, and start the process of repairing…if necessary.
One of the most effective ways to find our purpose is through developing a personal, family, or organizational mission statement. A mission statement is a document that acts as a guide to help make short, mid, and long term decisions. It becomes a sacred resource that has the power to override impulsive decisions that lead us to the path of least resistance. Rewards of such a path are few and leave us feeling empty and unfulfilled. We need strength and that strength is found in each of us. It is found in our deepest desires. The mission statement is the product of these desires. Our mission statement is something that we create. It is unique for each individual or entity because each is unique.
I have found tremendous success in following the Franklin Covey process for mission statement creation. Just go to google and input “Mission Statement Builder Franklin Covey” and it should be the first result. Just click the link and you are ready to go.
Just ensure that before you start this exercise you go to a quiet place; a place free of distraction. It is here that you will want to relax and center yourself on being calm and present.
