Assessments can help you in seeking out your DREAM job and in your career
Are you one of the many professionals who made a New Year’s resolution that this is THE year. THE year? Yes, the year you will secure the job of your DREAMs. Of course, making the resolution is one thing, but taking those first few steps can feel like you’re packing to go off to college! What do you do first and where can you find the guidance and resources to succeed in this venture?
Last month I shared a framework that provided guidance on the first steps to take toward obtaining your DREAM job. In the first step of the D.R.E.A.M. framework, I suggested that you start by Determining what your dream job really is, and I highlighted the importance of leveraging assessments. As a coach, I often find that people want to explore the value assessments will provide in their career search. My answer is simple:
BEWARE! Assessments are not a panacea to resolve job dissatisfaction.
If you are considering a career change, know your current career is a misfit for you, or have not yet settled on what your next career will be, you’re likely a great candidate to leverage assessments in your exploration. There are a variety of available assessments, and some of them are free and available to you. Understanding yourself and how your strengths can play into different career choices is a great place to start in your exploration.
CHECK OUT these free assessments (you can find the links on my website at lisaphalen.com)
1. Emotional Intelligence: Particularly important for a leader or aspiring leader to have insight into their blind spots
2. Career Inventory: This assessment identifies your area of strongest interest in one of the six Holland career categories
3. Values Inventory: A great way to get insight into your strengths
4. Big 5 Personality: This assessment gives you insight into your default personality traits – do they match the culture of the organization you are looking to join?
Good luck in your journey towards a new career! I’d love to hear about your journey and how assessments might have played a part in obtaining your DREAM job!
