7 Questions to Target Goals with a Clear Vision

Having goals is fine but defining them with a clear vision is the only real way you will achieve them. And to do that you must start with questions.
About a year ago I was invited by a friend to an indoor shooting range. Having never been to one I happily joined him. However, I soon had a Homer Simpson “D’OH!” moment. I left my glasses at home and didn’t realize it until I was in the booth trying to aim at the target in front of me.
The real reason I left my glasses is not because I forgot them, but rather at the time I was fighting the fact that I HAD to wear them. I was simply just being stubborn about the idea of needing assistance to see clearly. But this event did teach me a great lesson that I want to share with you.
I believe the target was only about 10 yards away for my first round of shots. Being so, I was able to see fine and did pretty well. Unfortunately, once they started moving the target further away, I noticed the clarity of the target began to quickly decay.
BLURRED VISION, BAD RESULTS
My final round of shots were made with the target being approximately 25-30 yards off. At this distance there was no hope. I was merely shooting at a large piece of hanging paper and hoping to hit somewhere in the vicinity.
Once I was done and they reeled in my results, I laughed. I had missed the target completely twice and my “hits” were all over the place.
LESSON LEARNED
We all want to live a life of significance. Along with that significance we attach goals to help us reach that desire. But just setting and acting on our goals is not enough. You MUST have a clear vision on how to succeed at them.
Just as with my attempt to hit the target at a distance, I could not see the it clearly and so I missed it greatly. Though I knew it was there and I had the right tools and skill to hit it, I still missed simply because I did not have clear vision.
Though this is just an illustration of my point, I have also personally experienced how crucial clear vision is in the pursuit of goals. Many times I have had good intentions and fantastic goals but never took the time to clarify them. Being so, I failed and became frustrated.
GREAT QUESTIONS GIVE GREAT RESULTS
If you have a desire, a dream, a passion in your life (and I am sure you do), then you will need to set goals. When you do, I want you to take time to be as clear as you can with each of them. Please do not skip this step or you will run a very high risk of failure as I did.
To do so, ask yourself some very in depth questions about the goal(s). Here are some to get you started:
What are the possible obstacles I will face?
How much of an investment in time and money will it require?
How much time will this take each day/week to reach?
Who can I talk to for input?
What resources and tools are available to me?
What am I willing to sacrifice to capture this goal?
Do I have the unconditional support of my spouse/family?
I would also suggest that when you are thinking about your goals, that you set S.M.A.R.T.E.R. Goals . This is an acronym for a set of criteria to help you in the process. I will write more about this in another post later. Until then, keep setting goals and acting on them with a Clear Vision.
