This morning I Googled ‘Stress’ and 104,000,000 headlines populated in 0.57 seconds. Impressive! The first few headlines read – ‘What can we Learn from the Science of Stress’, ‘Chronic Stress can Wreak Havoc on the Body’ and ‘The Alarming Long Term Consequences of Work Place Stress’.
What is stress? Sciencenews.org provides a simple explanation of how stress works in the body “The effects of stress start in the brain and extend through the action of hormones to reach all corners of the body. Scientists define emotional stress as a negative reaction to a perceived threat or other problem.” Stress – like fight or flight – triggers an excess cortisol release into our system.
Over time this results in medical implications can include:
Altered immune systems
Burnout
Inflammation
Asthma
Longer recovery from illness
And many more
How do we get stressed? Stress results when our story about what should be is different than what actually is -simply put we get in our heads. We begin to feel insecure in our careers, relationships, and financially. We put in longer hours at the office thinking it will help – neglecting exercise and important relationships.
According to an article on Forbes.com stress related illness accounts for approximately $180B a year in annual health costs. Wow.
How do we stop stress?
Breathing – is one of the most underutilized tools to reduce stress is a big deep breath
Hypnosis or Guided Meditation (not to be confused with medication)
Exercise – simply take a walk
Job security – employers and government officials take note – individuals need to feel secure in their jobs
