Why I Read a Book a Day

In life we cannot do big things without a big dream. None of us have to pass on the notion that there are limits.
That's why I read a book a day.
“Those who do not study are only cattle dressed up in men’s clothes.” Confucius
My mission in life is to maximize my potential and do everything humanly possible to help my family, friends and clients do the same. One mission critical strategy I apply to stay on my path is by reading a book a day. Reading, specialized reading, is how I go about executing peak performance best practices from people who are a lot smarter than me.
When I am reading, I am not reading for pleasure, I read transactionally. I read the way I scratch for an idea, digging down deep so I can get something that I can immediately apply to my life. I am like a archeologist on my latest dig using every tool in my kit to find even the smallest bone that will bring my latest project together. I am like the gold miner going deep into the mine for that one piece of gold that will change his life forever.
Every time I read a book, I am exposed to new ideas and a new way of thinking. For example, I read two biographies a week and you can think about what kind of information that offers me? I am basically downloading the thinking and knowledge of the most successful people in history directly into my own brain. I am being mentored by professional athletes like Michael Jordan (Michael Jordan the Life). Or billionaire businessmen like (Jeff Bezos (the Everything Store), Steve Jobs (Steve Jobs) and Richard Branson (Screw It, Let’s Do It). Or by deep spiritual thinkers and World changers like Gandhi (Gandhi: An Autobiography my experiments with the truth) and Mother Teresa (No Greater Love). Many people I come across tell me that reading a book a day is impossible. Absolutely not true, reading is a skill and just like any other skill can be improved through deliberate practice. This improvement not only comes in reading speed but reading comprehension as well. I barely graduated high school so I know that if I can do it anyone can do it. I view the book a day skeptics in the same way I view the people who say I cannot go from an overweight smoker to a World-class sprinter (Keep Fueling the Fire!). Exceptional thinkers ignore their critics and go about their business making history. In life we cannot do incredible things without an incredible dream. If we want to live a life of greatness, if we want to honor that deep drive within each of us to fully express ourselves in this hero’s journey of ours, we MUST step outside of what’s “reasonable” and dare to dream. None of us have to pass on the notion that there are limits. That’s why I read a book a day.
