How can we approach time management in a way that allows us to shift our perspective from viewing it as work to fulfillment?
Managing our time is always time consuming work, since getting things done is essential on both a personal and professional level. Taking extra time just to manage our day can overwhelm us, simply because it can create the feeling that we are adding more work to the already overworked pile that makes for our daily existence. How can we approach time management in a way that allows us to shift our perspective from viewing it as time management to honoring our values?
The reason time management can feel taxing to us is usually because we spend our time daily doing things in relation to others. We utilize our time to respond to needs, requests and the priorities of others, simply because, by doing so we adhere to the basic need of honoring our values. We prioritize values such as responsibility, reliability, and understanding those around us, ignoring usually the things that we need to accomplish for ourselves. In prioritizing these values, we end up neglecting, by means of running out of time another set of values of equal importance in living a balanced life: responsibility to our own commitments, excellence, leadership, empowerment and joy.
Managing our time in a way that allow us to view it not as additional work but as the means to honoring all of our values, can create a monumental shift towards feeling that you are not any longer at the effect of others, but most importantly, at the cause. Let’s start approaching the task of managing our busy time not as work, but as a meaningful way to ensure that we become aware of our commitments to ourselves, that we are focused, and that we are the cause of our day. In doing so, we can create a sense of control that allows us to fulfill our commitments and responsibilities to ourselves, as well as to others!
