DO LAXATIVES HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS?
Many people who are using laxatives for weight loss are not aware of the negative health consequences of this habit. Some people think that laxatives help to move the food that they have eaten quickly through their body before the calories get the chance to be absorbed by their body, but this is not the case.
USE OF LAXATIVES FOR WEIGHT LOSS
Laxatives cause large amounts of water to be drawn into the large intestine to stimulate the bowel to more quickly expel its contents. The problem is that by the time the food has reached the large intestine, the majority of the nutrients and calories have already been absorbed by the body when it traveled through the small intestine.
Health problems & side effects of using laxatives
• Laxatives expel partially-digested food and water—not fat.
• Abuse of laxatives can lead to dehydration and mineral deficiencies
• Abusing laxatives can cripple the normal function of the gastrointestinal tract causing it to be dependent on the use of laxatives to encourage bowel movements.
• Renal failure can be a result of using laxatives for weight loss. The Kidneys can suffer damage as the body loses a massive amount of fluids, minerals and electrolytes.
• The metabolism slows down as the body becomes dehydrated and dependant on the use of laxatives.
WEIGHT LOSS AND LAXATIVES (WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON HERE?)
Often the abuse of laxatives as a method of weight loss or weight maintenance belies the underlying issue of an eating disorder that needs to be addressed. If your real challenge is a food addiction, yet you are using laxatives as a way to counteract the consequences of bingeing, the food addiction needs to be dealt with and healed. Excessive colon cleansing in order to lose weight will not clean away the low self-esteem and depression that may be causing you to turn to food to soothe and comfort you.
TAKING LAXATIVES FOR WEIGHT LOSS (ARE YOU DOING THIS?)
If you have been using laxatives to lose weight, and you have noticed some of the side effects emerging, maybe it’s time for you to take the first step towards resolving the reasons that are causing you to feel addicted to bingeing on food. Working with a Christian weight loss coach will give you the knowledge, the tools, the encouragement and the support that you will need in order to face down your food addiction that is causing you to eat more than you want to and to be overweight and unhealthy.
