Your Inner Champion: How Deep is it Buried?

Your inner champion - do you think you have one? Are you willing to do what's necessary to release it and start creating your best life?
Who, what and where is this Inner Champion?
A few years ago there was a coal mining accident in northern Chile whereby 33 men (who affectionately became known as Los 33) were literally buried for 69 days. Deep in the desert, these men were trapped 3 miles in the earth’s belly. Less than six months before this accident, Chile had endured both an earthquake and a tsunami.
The Chilean’s strong empathy for the workers and their grief-stricken families led the national government to take over the faltering search and rescue operation from the mine’s owners, who were out of money. With the significant resources that the state-owned mining company was able to marshal, eight exploratory boreholes were hastily drilled.
And so goes the search for the Inner Champion – sometimes the search must be financed).
Seventeen days after the accident, a note written in bold red letters appeared taped to a drill bit when it was pulled to the surface after penetrating an area believed to be accessible to the trapped workers. It read simply “Estamos bien en el refugio, los 33” (“We are well in the shelter, the 33 of us”). The nation of Chile erupted into a wave of euphoria and demanded that Chile’s leaders find a way to bring the trapped workers safely home to their waiting families.
Los 33 were found alive, full of hope, expectation and determination. They are the absolute metaphor of the Inner Champion, struggling for oxygen and life itself in the very bowels of our existence. The rescuers dug 3 miles into the earth to save these men…. if I were to go on an expedition today, how far would I have to go to reach your Inner Champion? And once I got there, what would I find?
Mining is a dangerous job, with more than its share of potential hazards. But so is life. As a matter of fact, life is so dangerous that you cannot get out of here alive. But what you do along the way will determine the quality and the fullness of your journey.
At birth, your Inner Champion is thriving. It is alive and well and glorious, knowing that it just pushed you through the odds of destruction, living in that tiny prime real estate called a womb. Your Inner Champion reaches the outside world full of energy and excitement and passion, ready to take the world by storm.
Hold this heavy head up on this tiny neck? Got it. Stand up on these soft boned, fleshy extremities and become my own personal transport system? Okay, Got it. Relieve myself in a specific receptacle and not just go at will, like I’ve bee doing for the past 18 months of my life? Done. And the list goes on. You were designed to be a Winner. You were designed to conquer obstacles, overcome new, unfamiliar situations, to live outside of the box.
And then normalcy sets in.
You stop setting new personal records and start living in the Zone of the Average. Your Inner Champion starts looking to the right and left, making sure to color within the lines and paint by the numbers. This mighty, unconquerable, dominating spirit, becomes a compliant being. One that blends in and doesn’t bring too much attention to itself. Just making the team is enough. Maintaining a C average becomes sufficient. Working on a treadmill job as a cog in the wheel becomes the norm. You are now the not so proud owner of a “quiet life of desperation”.
You have become normal.
If that is not okay with you, I want to invite you on an expedition. One that aims high and hits the mark. An expedition that your Inner Champion will recognize as similar to it learning to walk for the first time or to blow your nose effectively. In hindsight, these may not seem to be BIG achievements, but to that new Inner Champion that had just hit the scene, these were major feats. And along the same parallel reasoning, for those of us who have already connected with our Inner Champion, we may think it a small task for someone to think positive, affirming thoughts throughout the day or to expect good things to come one’s way, every day – but I must remind you that that line of thought is neither automatic nor accidental.
You have to work at it.
You have to dig deep, to be ready to scale some depths, get rid of some old life choking habits, and come out, in the midst of soot and ash and smoke, with that Inner Champion thrown over your back, in a fireman’s carry.
I’ve got my shovel in one hand and a flash light in the other. I am ready to help you rescue the one that will put you on point for the rest of your days. The one that will gladly embrace your arrival and have but one question for you….
What took you so long?
