The Big Picture

Feeling discouraged because something isn't going the way you want it to? This one's for you.
Welcome, Blossoms!
I’ve been quiet here on the blog while I’ve been focusing on creating lots of new and exciting things for all of you. It’s been a lot of fun and a lot of work. This week has been been especially tough. Thought I’d share a little with you to keep it real around here, and because I’m guessing you might be able to relate …
The gist is that a project I’ve been pouring my heart into is not panning out the way I hoped it would. As much as I’ve been trying to keep a positive attitude, go with the flow, and trust that everything happens for a reason, some feelings of discouragement have still been creeping in — no, make that, taking over. Not just about this project, but about my ability to succeed at anything for the rest of my entire life. (Yes, I can be a drama queen sometimes.)
Sound at all familiar?
Then yesterday, I came across this scripture passage in my daily devotional, The Word Among Us. Deuteronomy 34:1: “The Lord showed him all the land,” depicting when a weary Moses was shown the entire spread of land that God’s chosen people would someday occupy. It pointed out how easily we can get weighed down in the details, and how we can feel defeated when every single detail doesn’t go the way we want it to.
These are the times when it’s a good idea to ask God to remind us of the big picture. Just like when He showed Moses “all the land.”
After reading that — and getting head-to-toe goosebumps — I realized it was no coincidence that I had awakened that very morning feeling pulled towards the ocean, which is always awe-inspiring for me. I packed up my office and drove to a local hotel with an ocean view, where I could work for the day while being reminded of the vastness of my greater mission.
Clearly, my heart knew that I needed God to remind me of the big picture for my life and my work, and how this one project I’ve been feeling down about is just one detail in the greater vision I’m creating. And often it’s the details our minds perceive as “flawed” — like the individual, imperfect brushstrokes in a masterpiece painting — that lead to the greatest, unexpected beauty.
Now it’s your turn. What works best for you when you need to be reminded of your “big picture?” Is there someplace special you like to go, or something you like to do?
