Back Pain
Back pain is said to be the most common body pain in the United States and chiropractors have been proven time as an excellent source of relief.
Below is brief summary of common ways back pain can happen, a natural solution for back pain and ways to prevent back pain.
Back pain typically happens for one of two reasons, Poor Posture and Injuries.
Posture
Our spine works and feels best when it is in its ideal posture. When looking straight on, the spine should be straight up and down. When looking at the spine from the side, we should see 3 curves, one in the neck, one in the mid back, and one in the low back.
The way we sit, stand, sleep is extremely important in the development and maintenance of your posture. When we perform our activities of daily living our muscles are developing and/or recovering. The goal is to develop muscle around bones and joints in a good place (good posture). It is equally important for your muscles and joints to recover and heal in a good posture.
Injury
Injuries can come from falls, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, etc… Proper recovery from a back injury is crucial to the future health of your spine. It is important for the injured muscles to heal around bones in a good place.
A Natural Solution to Back Pain
Treatments for back pain range from gentle, non-invasive chiropractic care all the way to surgery. While there is a time and a place for everything, I believe in the philosophy of natural first, drugs second, and surgery as a last resort.
Chiropractors relieve back pain every day. They do this through safe, gentle and effective chiropractic adjustments to the spine and extremities. Chiropractic adjustments help to relieve pain, improve joint movement and relieve pressure on nerves. This allows the body to work at its optimal level.
Prevent Back Pain
One way to ensure you are developing an ideal posture is to use and ideal posture. If you were to drop a plumb line down the side of your body, your ear should be over your shoulder, your shoulder over your hip, and your hip over your ankle.
Sitting tips:
Adjust the height of your computer monitor so that you maintain the curve in your neck while you are looking at it.
Use the headrest in your vehicle.
Stretch and/or move around every hour.
Standing:
If you are standing for extended periods of time, put one foot out slightly in front of you.
Using a foot rest or foot rail while standing will also take pressure off of your low back.
Sleeping:
Sleep on your back or side. Avoid sleeping on your stomach.
Use a pillow that supports your neck on both your back and side.
The best position for your body is not just one position. Move and change position every hour.
Chiropractors at our office can also help identify other causes of back pain. We help people to prevent surgery and even help people to feel better after surgery.
