Got Stress? Overwhelm, Anxiety? Do you worry what the future might bring in your health, relationships, and finances? What if you had the antidote? Well you do. It’s right there inside you. It’s your resilience factor.
But what exactly does resilience mean? The origin of the word resilient comes from the mid 17th century Latin resilient-‘leaping back’. Today’s 21st century definition by the Institute of HeartMath®, captures a much broader understanding applicable to our modern lifestyle: Resilience is the capacity to prepare for, recover from and adapt in the face of stress, challenge or adversity.
We all have an inner battery of stored energy (our resilience), which we can draw from throughout the activities of our day. When our resilience gets low we often say “I’m drained” or I’m wiped out”. You have probably noticed by the time you have acknowledged the drain you have already been running on empty—it’s difficult to be creative, think clearly, perform tasks well and you may even have been irritable with your loved ones and colleagues. It makes sense that the more resilience you have, more energy is available and you have a greater physiological capacity to self-regulate and take charge of how you respond in situations.
We have four primary domains of resilience: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. For our inner energy battery to be fully re-charged it’s important to be attentive to all four domains—as each affects the others.
In the physical domain our resilience is affected by our physical flexibility, endurance, and strength; in the emotional domain our self-regulation, positive outlook, and emotional flexibility; in the mental domain our attention span, ability to focus, to incorporate multiple points of view and mental flexibility to make changes; in the spiritual domain our resilience depends on our commitment to values, tolerance of others’ values and beliefs and our spiritual flexibility.
Some of us are naturally more flexible in one domain over another. If we drain energy, for instance, in our emotional domain by loosing our cool, then that creates a fight or flight reaction in the other three domains of our physiology. I know that in the evening when my physical energy is low, that I am more susceptible to being grouchy (ouch for my dear husband), and it’s definitely not the best time to make major financial decisions. It’s important to pay attention to our domains warning signals.
By Learning and applying energy-management skills we can prepare for, recover from and adapt to stress or challenges in any one of our domains. So on those nights when I am ‘wiped out’ I can do my self-care, communicate my needs to my husband and schedule the family budget meeting for another time. Taking care of my resilience is so worth it because I can have a better sleep and more energy ready to take on a new day with vigor, joy and clarity.
