Fear is a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger whether the threat is real or imagined. There are different categories or types of fear. Some fears are the result of our basic need for survival while other fears can be learned thoughts and behaviors which can be re-learned and improved.
Some fears prevent people from reaching their potential in life. For example, Are you afraid to fail? Do you find yourself playing it safe and missing out on potential opportunities? Do you worry about looking incompetent or unworthy? Perhaps you lack the confidence you need to be who you want to be or do the things you desire. Do you find yourself saying, “I wish I had the courage she or he has” with a person in mind. If you let fear control your life, it will be hard to embrace situations, unfamiliar people, and live life to the fullest. If you have an overwhelming amount of fear, it can keep you from reaching your dreams or having life experiences that will benefitted you in some way. Fear is only a significant problem if it keeps you from doing the things you want or need to do. Use this fear as your motivation and catalyst for change. Fear doesn’t have to direct our lives and prevent us from maximizing our human potential. You can turn this around. Here are two highly recommended and effective strategies:
Visualize your Success. If you are making your way through the path of success and you feel burnt out and overly stressed. Take a step back and breathe. Close your eyes and visualize yourself as that person who has reached your goals. For example, you can picture yourself getting the promotion which you have been working so hard for. Think about the reason why you want to succeed. This can help give you the confidence you need.
Adopt a New Perspective on Achievement and Failure. In mainstream culture, it is common to do two things: 1) Have concrete goals with predefined outcomes and 2) To view outcomes as either failures or successes. It is often unhelpful for people to think in terms of “All or Nothing” or “Black and White”. Furthermore, it is a thinking deeply rooted in judgment. Here is an alternative idea. 1) Set goals if you would like, but be mindful and open your mind to go places you never intended or expected to go. And 2) View outcomes as experiments and experiences that teach you a lesson. There is no bad path and no bad destination ahead.
You are the captain of your ship, remember? You will never be the person you want to be if you will continue to live your life based on self-limiting beliefs and fear. You will always be afraid and you will only have limited options in your life. You still have time to expand your options. Be proactive and start taking over your life. Be smart, strong, and fearless in achieving your goals. Finally, always remember that without risks there can be no rewards.
