Your Life's Idea

There are fundamental rhythms at work throughout our biography. Interpreting significant events in the light of these rhythms lead to helpful insights
Your Life’s Idea
Become aware of and embrace the spiritual seed of your life’s reality to live consciously and fully.
It is surely one of the more interesting facts of life that everything we perceive in the material world around us, from buildings, fashion clothing, cars, chemical substances and technical appliances, to art, medicines, books and musical instruments, just to name a few examples, was an idea first. Everything that surrounds us on a physical level was preceded by an idea that existed in someone’s mind. This concept could even be applied to the whole of creation itself.
Once an idea was deemed interesting, exciting and important enough, it was worked into a three dimensional form. In this process, the idea moved out of the non-physical realm into the physical realm.
The Spiritual Source of Life
Would it be possible for us to approach our current life from the same interesting angle, and ask ourselves the question: “What is the idea that lies at the foundation of my life? And furthermore, what makes that idea interesting, exciting and important enough that it is now expressed in time as my life?”
Usually we do not engage in such reflections, mostly because there is little reason for it. We live our lives, we make our choices and deal with things as best we can. But when we wish to live more consciously and if we wish to fulfill our ‘life purpose’ (see: ‘What is your reason for living’) we could be in need of some guidance.
Now, you do not directly experience the ‘idea’ at the foundation of your life, which some may call ‘life purpose’ or ‘spiritual essence’. That essence guides you from without. A measure of personal development is needed for that ‘idea’ to unfold and to reveal itself. This development is in part expressed through your biography.
The Rhythm of Life
Development in your biography takes place as significant changes that occur at rhythmic intervals. There are some fundamental rhythms at work throughout the course of your biography. These rhythms work as waves: there is not one particular day when one phase changes into the next, and yet there comes a time when we can clearly observe when a new phase has established itself. Over the years and throughout these processes you will characterise yourself again and again, and still you are the same person living in each phase.
One such rhythm is known as the seven-year rhythm: clearly identifiable developments, qualities and characteristics that belong to consecutive seven-year periods.
Another, less-known rhythm occurs every 18 years, 7 months and 9 days. Again, this rhythm works as a wave, with the crest positioned at this interval.
At the crest of these intervals (18 years, 7 months and 9 days – 37 years, 2 months and 18 days – 55 years, 9 months and 27 days respectively) you are particularly perceptible to the ‘idea’, the ‘spiritual essence’ that lies at the foundation of your life.
Rhythmic Consciousness
Why can it be helpful to know about these rhythms?
We are not consciously aware of the working of these rhythms, and so they manifest externally as symptoms. The periods associated with these rhythms are often experienced as changes in one’s external environment, such as a change in the direction of one’s study, challenges in relationships, forced retrenchment or unexpected good fortune, but also as changes in one’s physical constitution, possibly accompanied by the experience of depression, inner doubts, health problems, a loss of direction and a feeling of standing on a threshold.
The threshold experience is marked by the inner realisation that much of what lies behind you in terms of values, ambitions, beliefs and convictions have played their part and have now lost their necessity and relevance, whilst much of what is to come as a matter of renewal is as yet unformed. As a result, a period such as this can cause strong feelings of despair, frustration and being overwhelmed.
But when you are able to place and interpret challenges and crises that occur in your life within the context of your biographical rhythms, you can learn that those challenges and crises are more than apparent accidents and hindrances. They are sometimes necessary events as part of the guidance that is needed for the ‘idea’ behind your life to find a way into your consciousness.
Conclusion
A spiritual renewal often enters in the guise of a crisis. Offering both danger and opportunity, this precious event can open a passage to a next chapter in your life. This realisation will make it possible for you to take hold of your challenges and find the hidden potential within them.
