The 5 Questions you should ask yourself to help make an informed decision that you can feel good about.
Choosing the right coach can be an ominous task, especially in a field that is not strictly regulated. Here are 5 questions you should ask yourself to help you make an informed decision:
1. What do I really want?
You need to assess your needs, and what exactly you are looking to achieve. Does your goal relate to your career, your relationships, your physical health? Some Coaches out there will claim to do it all, from helping you exercise more, to helping you get through a divorce. Your coach should have a specific niche. Decide what you need, and find a coach in that area.
Because the Coaching profession is not entirely regulated, anyone out there can claim to be a “Coach” after watching some videos, or reading a book. The International Coach Federation (ICF) is one regulatory body that does exist; training programs accredited by the ICF are ones that can be trusted. Research the training program of the Coach you are looking at to see if it is legitimate. If a website is displaying an ICF logo, then they must have completed an accredited program.
3. What makes them an expert in their field? Some coaches may talk about their expertise or authority in a certain area – do not be afraid to ask them about it. People may have other education, or career experience that lends them skills and abilities that they can use within their Coaching niche.
4. Do I like their approach?Spend some time researching their website, or reading their blog. Find out if you share their perspective on life in general, and if their online presence seems to intrigue you.
5. Can I schedule a free consultation? Many coaches offer a free consultation or meeting in which you can ask them questions not answered in your research. Talk to them and find out if you like them. Gauge your level of comfort. Are they someone you can trust? Coaching is a very personal experience, and therefore you must be sure that you feel comfortable with the Coach you choose.
