The Present Moment

Mindfullness is a practice and very much worth a try.
The present moment is really the only moment there is. The past is gone and the future has yet to occur. Being present or mindful is about focusing your attention on what is going on in that very moment and thinking about nothing else. There are many useful and practical reasons to be mindful such as, help with physical pain, relief from cravings…big projects become manageable, food tastes better and you eat less of it, learn new things easier, break bad habits, greater self confidence, the list goes on.
Mindfulness is a practice. You practice it throughout your day. When you are doing something, such as driving, how many times do you find your mind wandering to what you have to do later, the argument you had with your mother or what you are eating for lunch and with whom? To be present in this case means to concentrate only on driving…and nothing else! A great question to ask your self is “Am I present?” This will always bring you back to the present moment.
Meditation is a great way to strengthen your mindfulness “muscle”. Light a candle and stare at the flame and focus on all aspects of that flame, the blue light, the yellow light, the halo above the candlelight. Doing this for a few minutes a day is a great way to start. You can also sit quietly in a chair, feet on the ground, hands on the lap and focus on the in and out breath. Count from 1 to 10 with each out breath and begin again. Thoughts will come into the mind, when you remember, go back to the breathing and counting. In time, you will be able to stay in the counting mode longer and longer. For every moment you stay in the moment, you build a greater and greater connection to Source. That is the place of infinite possibilities.
