When setting goals for yourself, the SMART goal system can help you to maximize your results.
We all do it. We put things off for later, tell ourselves it is not a good time right now, there’s just one more thing to do first before I tackle that, I don’t feel like it today, and on and on… We procrastinate.
How can we go about the herculean task of actually accomplishing our goals? Here is a simple guide that you can us today to help with your goal-setting and follow-through. Make your goals SMART. I am not generally one to get excited about acronyms, but this is a useful one.
So, here is the breakdown:
S – Specific. Make your goals specific; as specific as you can.
M – Measureable – You should be able to measure your progress, so break down each of your goals into bite-sized, measureable little goals. This way, you can see the progress, and find encouragement in the little successes along the way.
A – Achievable – Your goals should be reasonably achievable, in the sense that larger goals should be broken down into several individual tasks which can be accomplished easily, preferably in one day or less.
R – Risky – Yes, risky. Not in the daredevil sense of the word that you are probably envisioning. Risky in that the goal should take you slightly beyond your comfort zone. This is the only way that you will be able to grow as a person, and make today different than yesterday.
T – Time Limited – Your goals should always have a timeline, so that you are able to stay on schedule, keep on track, and reign in the procrastination.
As I mentioned, this is a useful tool to keep in mind while you are setting up your plans for the future. So stay focused, keep positive, and move one step at a time. Before you know it, you may look back and be amazed at just how far you have come!
