Incorporating Mindfulness into a Busy Executives Schedule
What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is the intentional, accepting and non-judgemental focus of one’s attention on the emotions, thoughts and sensations occurring in the present moment, which can be trained by meditational practices. I find the biggest problem my clients have is anxiousness, depression, not being able to sleep, and especially for type A executives/CEO’s, not being able to shut off their minds/thoughts. Their brains are always buzzing! They complain of constant ADD. They seek a life coach to help alleviate these common problems they have. Mindfulness opens up areas in the brain that were not open before (especially CEO’s who think about strategy and systems, not themselves or people). The common complaint I receive is that meditation is difficult, they don’t see the benefits, they can’t focus, its a waste of time etc
This is all common as most people do not have that network in their brain available to them to focus that intently and can only do it for a very short amount of time like a few seconds. The benefits of mindfulness meditation cannot be obtained through one session or a few sessions. The full benefits arise after a few months to years (although studies show even a few weeks start to show positive changes in the brain). It’s like going to the gym, you continue to do it to receive life long health benefits not just a quick fix. Just like going to a life coach you can’t expect a thorough life shift in just one session. One session may bring greater clarity to a specific issue but expecting great changes to major issues such as time management, anxiety, happiness, true fulfilment in a career or a relationship is a process and will take continued consistent effort with you and your coach.
Beginning meditation should be uncomfortable at first as it is something new to you and your brain does not recognize this activity or process it the same way someone who has been doing it for years does. Only with consistent and committed practice can one achieve the true benefits which are an effortless happiness, greater focus, greater self awareness, greater creativity (great for artists, writers, and other creative professionals), less judgment and less anxiety.
