There are many self-limiting beliefs that we can have and they can be viewed as the inner reason for false and limiting views of our potential.
“Determination always finds a way around obstacles.” Henry Ford
Since many of the struggles we go through in life seem to come from our self-limiting beliefs, it stands to reason that whatever you believe becomes your reality. Fortunately you can get rid of self-limiting beliefs by essentially changing your programming; but, changing this programming requires initially determining what your personal self-limiting beliefs really are.
There are many self-limiting beliefs that we can have and they can be viewed as the inner reason for false and limiting views of our potential. Since many of these beliefs can be based upon ‘wrong facts’, they prompt us to proceed in life with undue caution and often resistance.
Author and Coach, Debbie Ford, synthesized these negative thoughts down to three common core beliefs:
1. I don’t matter,
2. There is something wrong with me, and
3. I’m not good enough.
Some of the most common self-limiting beliefs portray themselves as excuses and can include:
I’m afraid of success
I’m not as good as they are
I’m not worthy
It will be difficult
It’s going to be risky
It will take a long time
There will be family drama
I don’t deserve it
It’s not my nature
I can’t afford it
No one will help me
It has never happened before
I am not strong enough
I’m not smart enough
I’m too old or not old enough
The rules won’t let me
It’s too big
I don’t have energy
It’s my personal family history
I’m too busy
I’m too scared.
So Are You a Self-Doubter?
- Afraid of sounding dumb at a meeting, so you just listened and did not participate?
- Felt guilty about charging for your professional time?
- Wondered if you were a fraud when you compared yourself to others on the job?
- Decided not to apply for an opportunity because you felt others were better than you
- Felt negative or jealous about other people’s successes
- Compared yourself to others’ benchmarks for success
- Allowed others to decide for you because you doubted yourself?
If you answered “yes” to at least four of these seven common situations, you’re a self-doubter.
What Can You Do To Negate This Self Doubt?
Entrepreneur mentor, Ali Brown, says, “People go to war and die for their beliefs—that is how strong they are. So beliefs affect our day-to-day decisions and our ultimate potential.”
A proactive approach starts with initial identification of the self-limiting belief or beliefs you feel most support the story you have that seems to be dis-empowering you. If possible, connecting with the root or the source of the belief can be very helpful. Understanding how this belief has worked against you can also be an important clue to why you should work on giving it up.
A simple concept identified as Gleicher’s Formula essentially provides you with the steps or impetus for changing these self-limiting beliefs. It captures succinctly how when we come to understand our place of dissatisfaction (don’t like the results of our self-limiting beliefs), and create a vision for what we really want (the great promotion, the wonderful relationship), then identification becomes greater than our resistance. This begins the flow necessary for the change that allows us to stop shying away from opportunities that are a true expression of our unlimited potential.
