Why You Stay in a Job You Don't Like Anymore

Learn about Jackie's story of staying in a job she hated and how she was able to break free and follow her passion.
Have you made resolutions in the past about making a job change?
And then one year later, you’re still in the same job.
Have you done this more than once? Don’t get discouraged, you’re not alone.
Let me tell you about Jackie.
Jackie was working as a wine distributor for a number of years and had been wanting to change jobs for quite a while. She loved a challenge, was a hard worker and knew her talents weren’t being fully utilized. But yet, she kept staying in this job and her stated reason was that she didn’t know what she wanted to do next.
But was that true? Did she really not know what she wanted to do?
Often times, when we are experiencing confusion or doubt, it is masking some fear that we may not even want to admit or deep down don’t know is there.
This was true in Jackie’s case. When she first came to coaching, she had hit her breaking point and wanted desperately out of her job. She said she wanted coaching because she had no clue what to do next.
However, after working with her, it was obvious she was passionate about law and in particular helping women who were victims of human trafficking. And I mean she was on fire around this issue and it’s impact on women in the United States. It was really inspiring to see.
Yet, she had all kinds of reasons why she couldn’t apply to law school. Money, time, could she find a job after graduation, loan debt, etc. The list could go on and on. But these were all just excuses for the real reason she wasn’t applying to law school. Deep down was a hidden fear of disappointing her parents if she failed at law school.
And this was a sharp lady. Beautiful, intelligent, a go-getter and determined. This fear was hidden deep inside her and she could not even see it till she really looked at why she was stuck.
What was great is that once she realized that was the fear, she knew she had a choice. She could decide whether that little Janet who wanted her parents approval gets to call the shots or the adult Jackie who wanted to go to law school.
Guess who won?
Jackie is on her second semester of law school and she’s kicking butt. And I have no doubt she’s going to have an impact in her legal career helping women and being a crusader for justice. I just love a happy ending!
