Brief hints from a technical recruiter on how to get your resume noticed.
I talked to Jeremy, a Chicago area company recruiter to ask his advice for my clients. Jeremy’s suggestions to get your resume noticed by HR are:
*Use buzz words from the job posting in context and as close to the top of the resume as possible and as frequently as possible.
*Make your resume easy on the eye.
*Have the first words of the summary say who you are by function so the recruiter knows which type of work you want. However, it is quite possible that the rest of the summary won’t be read.
*Having only two pages is a great rule but for highly technical people with a great deal of projects three pages might be okay. However, the project list has to be varied.
*Make sure to use bullet points. Recruiters don’t want to read bulky paragraphs.
*Font size needs to be 10 points or more but not so big that you are wasting space.
*Chronological is the best style.
*Only use 10 years of prior experience. I usually suggest no more than 10-15 but Jeremy thinks that 15 years is pushing it unless you are showing management skills.
