Living Your Divine Calling

Want to know if you're living your Divine calling?
I had a conversation with a man a month or so ago regarding his choice of career. He told me that he had wrestled quite a bit with which path he should choose. What he felt passionate about pursuing didn’t seem to be yielding him any financial rewards, so he chose a career path that was similar, yet not fully satisfying. He longed to be working with a certain type of client, but on his current career path, he rarely met such people. Still, he felt that he must be in the center of God’s will because his practice was flourishing financially.
This seeming paradox got me thinking about whether or not we can gauge being in the center of “God’s will” based upon the ease or benefit of external factors such as money, fame, prestige, etc. There is a certain calling placed within each of our hearts that must be fully realized to fulfill our personal destiny. Yet, somehow we have come to the conclusion that unless there is external benefit or reward, we must be missing the mark.
Recall for a moment some of the greatest artists, musicians, writers, and scientists from centuries ago. Many of these men and women revolutionized their fields and even the way we live life today. However, some also came to the end of their lives amongst ridicule and poverty as their ideas and innovations were not yet ready to be received by society. Still, I doubt any person would argue that Vincent van Gogh or Franz Schubert had not fulfilled their destiny simply because they couldn’t sell their works during their lifetime.
According to Marianne Williamson in the book “The Law of Divine Compensation”, we can know our calling when we recognize the thing we would be willing to do even if we weren’t paid… the thing we simply have to do in order to feel happy. It is a mistake to believe that we are fulfilling our destiny simply because we receive financial abundance, fame, or accolades while working at a particular job or trade.
Just ask any well-paid office worker who dreams of pursuing their passions instead of sitting behind a desk all day. They may have financial abundance, but they are not living abundantly because they aren’t fulfilling their calling.
To think of an extreme example, can a wealthy drug dealer assume he is fulfilling his Divine calling simply because of his financial gain, notoriety, and vast network of “friends”?
My personal experience has taught me that the yearning to pursue my calling is the only information I need to tell me which path to follow. When I am walking the path of my destiny, there is no longing to be anywhere else, or do anything else.
I notice that there is a tremendous willingness to rely upon God as my source, and to trust that all of my needs will be met. I may or may not ever achieve fame, receive accolades, or be financially wealthy. But I am certain my life will be rich and full as I live it in alignment with my Divine calling.
