Change them.
Does that seem a little too simplistic? Perhaps. But then again, maybe not. There are times when we all get caught up in periods of self-doubt. That’s normal and it’s actually okay. It’s when that self-doubt stays stuck in your head that there’s a real problem. It’s almost as though you’re dead. Well, dead in your tracks, at least. At best, you might go through life like a zombie – you end up doing nothing more than going through the motions. Yet, your brain is a miraculous tool… if you use it that way. But, if you spend too much time there – strategizing, planning, thinking of all the horrible things that could go wrong, etc, you’ll end up completely paralysed and will fail to take any action, period.
Instead of thinking too much about whatever it is you want to or need to do, you must act. Take whatever decision you’ve made, or would like to make, and act on it. Take steps right now to move yourself forward. What’s one small decision you could make right now, even whilst reading this article? Make sure that it’s one that would help take you in the direction you really want to go, no matter how small the step. Better yet, what’s a BIG decision you could make that would move you forward significantly regardless of how tough the decision?
Far too many people make decisions that, if they were really honest with themselves, they know they are not fully committed to. If you happen to be one of them, here’s the reason behind your lack of follow-through: you haven’t committed to your decision because you’ve failed to act on it. If you’re like most people, you were probably under the assumption that before you could take the appropriate action, you first needed to make an appropriate commitment. This just isn’t true. In fact, in order to experience being fully committed to your decision and to demonstrate that you are going to follow through on it, you must ACT. More than likely, you’ll have to push yourself to take that first step; it’s usually the hardest one.
When happens when you fail to take action? Your dreams will die. However, when you make a decision to pursue your dreams, you firmly establish your commitment by taking the first step right then and there. But don’t hesitate. If you delay taking action, you’ll end up repeating patterns of self-sabotage that you’re more than likely all too familiar with. For instance, you might return home, get distracted by the 1001 things that you think need to be done (many of which are insignificant and don’t really contribute to your fulfillment or success), and you won’t make any progress, whatsoever. Like many people do, you may then begin to doubt yourself (again) and wonder at the reason you don’t remain committed to your decisions in order to make your dreams a realty. True or false?
Today, however, you can choose to make a difference for yourself and for those about whom you care. You can fast-track your path to success and fulfillment. Find someone who has already accomplished what you would like to. Maybe they succeeded in losing 50 pounds. Or perhaps they became the leading sales person for the company for which they work. Maybe they have a truly loving, supportive relationship with their spouse – one that is worthy of admiration. Make sure that whatever you decide to pursue, you choose to follow someone who inspires you. This is called modelling. If you can duplicate what someone else has done, you’ll accomplish whatever it is that they did – often quicker than they were able to because you’ll also have the benefit of learning from their mistakes. Uncover the steps they took and perform the same steps. You’ll reach your goal in the shortest, most efficient manner possible. Figure out what sort of decision they committed to and acted on. What did they force themselves to do that carried them nearer to the future they desired?
Figure it out, then do the same thing.
