Simple Solution: Daily Inventory

Feeling like you're not getting anything done all day? Get some perspective by taking a Daily Inventory!
To Do Lists are some of my favorite things. Monthly, weekly, daily—I keep a list for just about everything. They help me prioritize, focus, and serve as a reminder of my goals. And while checking off an item on my To Do List (TDL) feels great, there are many days where I haven’t accomplished any of the tasks. Typically, those are the days I go to bed obsessing that I didn’t get anything done. “Where did my time go???” Disheartening, discouraging, depressing.
And yet…unless I was laying on the couch for 24-hours watching a House Hunters marathon (technically, an activity!), the truth is, I did do something during the day. Clarifying what those things were frequently helps me feel more grounded and productive.
Simple Solution: Daily Inventory
Taking a Daily Inventory provides perspective not only on the number of activities you do in a day but also on when you do them and how they make you feel.
Try this: Before going to bed tonight, take two minutes to write out a list of everything you did over the day. You can keep it simple by just naming activities (e.g., woke up, made breakfast, walked the dog, drove to work, etc…) or add an estimate of the amount of time you spent on each thing.
Do a quick review: Are you doing things you love? Maybe not so much? Did you take a break for yourself? Is there a way to better organize your day so that you can do more fun stuff and/or focus on a TDL item? Be curious! This is a great way to gain insight into what energizes you, drains you, and distracts you. It also helps to remind you that you are an active and productive part of the world.
