People who know their true calling tend to have higher levels of engagement and satisfaction in their lives. How can the rest of us get that?
Many of us are unclear of our life purpose are and lacking a clear direction in our lives. Imagine if you knew with complete certainty how you wanted to spend your life. Think of the comfort you might experience if you knew how to fulfill your potential and achieve personal satisfaction along the way.
People who are happy and look forward to their day at work are living the lives they were meant to live. Not surprisingly, these people rarely credit their fulfilled state to their company’s profit or bottom line. More likely, their level of engagement, energy, and level of satisfaction has to do with the fact that they are doing work that is meaningful to them. People who find meaning at work, tend to be in careers that are in alignment with their values. When this is the case, they tend to contribute more fully, navigate difficult situations gracefully, and make conscious choices which they believe in.
So how did these people determine their true calling, their purpose in life? And how can the rest of us get that?
A purpose driven life is valuable because it is the foundation upon which we build our lives. Since our true purpose is like a compass for our life, it always points the way. It provides the strength and determination that guides us through difficult times. We can all find our purpose if we’re willing to invest the time and energy.
Working with a coach can help you create more clarity on your own purpose in life and help you re-connect with it. Your coach will ask powerful questions that will help uncover what inspires you, where your passions lie, what you love more than anything else. Discerning your personal purpose is a process and rarely reveals itself in a blinding flash. The following questions can be used to facilitate the process of clarifying your personal purpose.
What would you do if you had one year to live?
What would you do if you had unlimited resources?
When do you feel the most energetic, alive?
What are your inner gifts and talents?
When are you at your best?
Reflecting on the insights gained from the exercises above, you can begin to draft a preliminary purpose statement which can be refined and reworked over time. Does your purpose statement energize you? Do you feel a deep sense of fulfillment when you act upon it? Spending the time to clearly define your purpose is worth the effort. It guides your choices and allows you to engage more fully with your life, while achieving more personal satisfaction than perhaps you have ever felt before.
