Whether you’re superstitious or not you’re probably well aware that today is Friday the 13th. So what's the story with all this?
Whether you’re superstitious or not you’re probably well aware that today is Friday the 13th. And you might have also heard that there is a full moon, and we’re in Mercury Retrograde. So what’s the story with all of this?
Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day, dating back to the 1800’s, and not with the beginning of the horror movie franchise (like I originally thought)! There are many theories as to why it is unlucky. One reason that I’m most familiar with is that Fridays were considered to be unlucky, and many people still believe the number 13 is unlucky. Tens of millions of Americans live in fear of Friday the 13th, to the extent of adjusting their normal daily routines – sometimes not even getting out of bed on that day.
Moving on to the full moon… Many people believe that the earth’s lunar cycle has an effect on animal and human behavior. The most popular belief is that there is an increase in violent, odd or unexplainable behavior during a full moon; however, beliefs range from increase in fertility to poor quality of sleep.
Mercury retrograde is when the planet Mercury slows down and appears to travel backwards. Right now, Mercury is in ‘retrograde’ until July 2nd. During this time, some people believe that communication becomes warped or lost. The most popular concern is a breakdown in communication resulting in misunderstandings. This includes anything relating to communicating, such as electronics going haywire, lost messages, jinxed business collaborations and more.
With all of this going on, how can you find some peace and tranquility? Let’s sort through the myths!
For Friday the 13th, studies show that there is actually a significant drop in accidents on this day because of people being extra cautious!
As for the full moon, numerous studies have been done to prove the correlation between the lunar cycle and behaviors but the theories were disproven. Although there are coincidences such as 28-day menstrual & lunar cycles, mating rituals of some wildlife, and more, there is no solid evidence that a full moon has a direct effect on behavior.
Mercury retrograde is actually an optical illusion. Mercury doesn’t stop or move backwards. The planet continues to move forward at a very slow rate that gives the illusion that it has either stopped or is traveling in retrograde. Some people believe this time is great for reconnecting with your own self. If you’re more cautious and limiting with your communication, you have more time and focus to catch up with where you’re at in life and regroup so you can move forward after this period. I like that idea!
Hope this helps to clear things up and put you at ease! It’s always great to be extra cautious to avoid accidents and miscommunications. Instead of being driven by superstition or fear, use this time as a reminder to be cautious, take care of yourself, and respect those around you!
