Poem from Under Construction: Life, by Sherman Burns
Parts of each
of us are broken
in childhood.
Most will heal
like bone, stronger
than before.
Some break over
and over – finally
mending, not with
a limp, more
a faltering
for which we learn
to compensate by
walking tightropes over
canyons and doing handstands
on flagpoles
letting the world
see us whole. Fragile
balance a way of life.
Take Aways:
• In the years since this poem was written, I’ve been figuring out ways to come down from my own
flagpoles.
• What are your flagpoles? Are you willing to climb down?
