Simple Solution: Morning Medicine

Posted on May 12, 2014 by Sara Weeks, One of Thousands of Health and Fitness Coaches on Noomii.

What's your morning prescription for positivity?

A prominent philanthropist once told me that he begins each morning by planting both feet firmly on the floor, clapping his hands together and saying out loud, “What are we going to do, today?” He then jumps on the treadmill and runs for 20 minutes. He’s now 95 years old and one of the happiest people I know.

For most of us, though, our mornings start a bit differently: multiple hits to the snooze button, a gallon of coffee, and supreme irritation with our fellow commuters as we rush to get to work on time. And we wonder why we frequently feel more like lemmings than leaders!

Simple Solution: Morning Medicine

Morning Medicine is a process of practicing mindfulness (aka awareness) first thing in the day for your physical, mental, and emotional health or, as I like to think of them, your Body, Mind, and Spirit. Think of it as a prescription for positivity. Taking a few minutes to consciously take care of your self before heading out the door sets an intention to lead your day feeling happier, more confident, and aware.

For the philanthropist, his Morning Medicine is curiosity (Mind), movement (Body), and enthusiasm (Spirit). My Morning Medicine is meditation and journaling (Mind), movement (Body), and scheduling Play Time (Spirit). And when I’m really on my game, I add in green juice for my Body. (Trust me, it’s delicious!)

Tomorrow, before getting out of bed, ask yourself, “What would make my Mind, Body, and Spirit feel good, this morning?” If it’s hitting snooze, fine! Just acknowledge that you are mindfully sleeping in for a few more minutes in order for your Body to feel more rested. Play with a variety of things until you come up with a Morning Medicine that works for you. Write down what you did and how it made you feel. In the evening, note how your personal prescription for positivity influenced your day. Be curious!
