Effective way to create goals that stick
George T. Doran’s (1981) SMART model is a way to make goal setting more attainable. In order to make a goal SMART, it had to be: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. Here is an example of how a goal of “I want to lose 10 pounds” would be applied:
S – specific: No, the goal is not specific in HOW to lose 10 pounds. From here, you can create a specific daily plan of action that will include exercise and nutrition so your goal says something like “I want to lose 10 pounds by running for 30 minutes a day.”
M – measurable: Yes, 10 pounds is measurable.
A – attainable: Yes, with my current weight, I can lose 10 pounds.
R – relevant: Yes, in terms of improving my health (the category), this is relevant.
T – time-bound: No, there is no date, so set set one: “I will lose 10 pounds in two months by running for 30 minutes a day.”
The next time you have a goal in mind, try out the SMART method of goal setting.
