6 Steps to Illuminating Your Life

That which you appreciate appreciates, and that which you diminish diminishes.
Have you ever noticed how just a small crack in the shades can fill your entire bedroom with light? Although positivity and optimism take less effort and feel better than negativity and cynicism, our inner critic sometimes takes hold of our perspectives and suddenly – often without our even knowing it – we adopt pessimistic perspectives that don’t serve us. This exercise will show you how to disrupt that darkness, and fill your life with light.
1.) Identify a topic that holds an emotional charge for you. That charge could be anything from anger, or sadness, or maybe something that just feels heavy in your life.
2.) Brainstorm and create a list of the ways you can shine a small amount of light on that situation. For now, don’t worry about whether you think the options are viable or realistic; criticisms such as, “calling my aunt after all of these years would never work” or “I would never clean my house naked” don’t count here!
3.) Spend 60 seconds expanding your list with as many ideas as possible.
4.) Put the list next to your bed. Circle one action/attitudinal change that you are willing to take and do it tomorrow.
5.) Afterwards, think about your action and whether it had any effect on your situation. Now circle another action that you’re willing to take the next day. (Nothing on your list that you’re willing to do yet? Then keep brainstorming and coming up with smaller steps until you identify one that you are willing to take!)
6.) Repeat this process for one week.
At the end of the week, reflect on what changed for you. If other people were involved in your situation it can be helpful to ask them if they witnessed any changes in you as well.
It doesn’t matter whether you chose big action steps or small ones – don’t forget, it only takes a little light to push out the darkness. Even if you may begin with small steps, push onwards—you will see movement, which will motivate you to keep shining more light on the situation. Right now, someone or something in your life is begging you to let the light in— the choice is yours: are you going to choose darkness, or are you going to circle an action on your list?
