Recognizing self limiting beliefs and fear when working towards reaching a goal
It is important to differentiate between fear and self-limiting beliefs. Fear can show up when you have a goal and it seems overwhelming and impossible to achieve. It can be there to protect you from making a mistake or it is there to hinder you from moving forward. That’s where the self-limiting belief shows up. Identifying these two feelings is helpful in overcoming fear.
Self-limiting beliefs are questions that pop up such as: Who am I to make such a change? I don’t have the right amount of experience, expertise, knowledge, etc. to make this successful. What if I make a mistake? What will people think of me then? What if things don’t go the way I planned? Identifying these self-limiting beliefs allows you to see them for what they are, self-limiting beliefs, and to get past them and move forward with your goal.
The awareness that fear has shown up is the first step to overcome it. Be curious about this sensation, how are you feeling this fear in your body, where are you feeling it, is your heart racing, are you feeling anxious? Then, identify what has triggered this feeling and whether this fear is coming from a genuine threat, a past experience, or your insecurity around this. Is it there to protect you or is it limiting you from moving forward. Now take a minute to calm yourself and be compassionate with yourself about the vulnerability that this change might bring, but without judgment. What would happen if you didn’t make this change to reach your goal?
It is totally normal to have fear when you are making major changes in your life, and it shows that you are stretching yourself outside of your comfort zone, taking risks. However, without these stretches and risks you will not move forward and make the changes to reach your goals.
