What exactly is a Life Coach? Find out here:
Here are some definitions as regards Life Coaching and the process a Coach goes through. This is a brief supplement to my original article- LIFE COACHING DEFINITIONS OCTOBER 2013.
Phrase Life Coach
According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word “Coach” is defined as: a person who teaches and trains an athlete or performer. A private teacher who gives someone lessons in a particular subject. “Life” is the experience of being alive. Therefore, a Life Coach can be summed up as a trainer to the living. We all need support, emotional and mental to help us through transitions and crises. Even if things are going well, a Coach can help give you an edge to maintain your pace.
Accountability
We all tell ourselves that we will stick to our exercise regimen, continue to diet or engage in a healthy lifestyle, etc…However, the reality is we let ourselves slack off more often than we should. Now, blowing off your goals can be refreshing, as sometimes you just need to lay back and recharge. For real progress to happen, we need an unbiased person in our corner who will hold us accountable;someone to bounce ideas off of and check in on our status.
Guidance as opposed to advice
A skillful Coach will guide clients as opposed to giving direct, opinionated advice. Guiding others is leading them on a journey of self-discovery and exploration. Directing another person’s behaviour, career, habits is different than advising. Bringing out the best in your client can help real change to manifest. A psychotherapist might give advice on a person’s mental status based on their social presentation.
Circle of Trust
Trusting your Coach is difficult for some and easy for others. Coaches vary greatly in terms of approach and energy level. First, trust yourself to give your Coach the correct information about your issues, roadblocks and setbacks. We all get stuck now and then. Getting out of your rut is the important part.
Coach synonyms
We all have a picture in our minds when we hear the word, Coach. Perhaps you remember your music teacher in school, or the pop warner football coach when you were a kid. Here are some synonyms that resemble what a coach is:
*Objective sounding board
*Emotional supporter
*Illuminator
*Director
*Cheerleader
Whatever your idea of a Life Coach is probably at least partly correct. Ask good questions to determine the style, approach and pace of your Coach before embarking on your process of personal development.
