Part 1 of 4
by: Garry Schleifer, PCC, CMC, CEO & Publisher ~ choice, the magazine of professional coaching
As this series reaches your eyes, choice, the magazine of professional coaching marks it’s 10th Anniversary.
Having produced almost 40 issues of amazing articles from great writers from all over the world, I thought it was time that I, Garry Schleifer, the Publisher, spoke to you about my passions, concepts and concerns. Not to mention to bring into the conversation over 26 years of business experience creating, building and leading many multi-million dollar companies…including choice Magazine!
In this series, we expand on the Whole~prenuer system that was first presented in the June issue of choice and in recent emails about choice Interactive Membership ™.
Whole~prenuer was developed in 2013 as a result of the collaborative efforts of Kim George and Garry Schleifer.
It plays on the concept that in business, like heading on a trip, travelling without a map or GPS (sometimes both!) can send us into places that most likely get us lost and for sure waste our time.
In this series we will introduce and explain the 4 quadrants (yes of course 4) of the Whole~prenuer system and some suggested steps to use it.
Part 1: Marketing, the action and attraction of ideal paying clients
This should really be called “step 1” because without clients we would not be in business and therefore not coaching.
But what would life be like with ideal clients?
[Defined as: The particular segment of the population that, either by demographic, psychographic or situation, is most likely to both purchase and benefit from a relationship with you and your product or service.]
Recently a writer for choice made mention to Thomas Leonard, the founder of the modern coaching profession, that we should not worry about who is our ideal client until we have coached at least 100 people.
What a great way to release the worry of niching yourself too early and worrying about if you will find the right clients.
Why is this a good strategy?
For a number of reasons;
First, you release the worry about whom you should work with.
Just coach anyone and everyone, everywhere you go.
Remember, no one said you had to get paid; the suggestion is to keep coaching.
Coaching, coaching & coaching some more will build your confidence in your coaching skill set and delivery. Leaving the worry about building your business to later on down the path.
Finally, once you have coached the more than 100 people, you can easily and comfortably look back and see who you liked coaching and why AND those you did not like to coach and why. At the post-100 point it will be SO easy to determine who is your ideal client and you will probably know exactly where to find them.
Field work:
• Go get some more coaching clients. Paid or unpaid, get coaching!!
• Take a look at what it is that you like about your clients. What are their demographics and psychographics?
• Think about where you might find more of them.
• Interview some of your favorite clients and find out what else interests them. What do they read? Where do they get together?
We hope this helps you relax about marketing for clients and allows you to coach.
If you want to have a GPS for business and move away from the noise and busyness of the outside world, watch for the Whole coach Assessment, a key piece to the new choice Interactive Membership.
