Working with Fear

Use these simple questions to help you navigate out of fear and into action.
Fear can be crippling and destabilizing, especially when we’re considering a big change.
Think about a change or action you’d like to take and ask yourself the following questions. Fill them out with as much detail as humanly possible, paint a full picture for each question. Let your imagination soar. Spend time on each, really filling in the details of what could be. (Credit to Jonathan Fields for the questions).
1. What if I fail?
2. How will I recover?
3. What if it works?
4. What if I do nothing?
When you look at these four possible outcomes, it begins to highlight where your fear is holding you stuck. And what you really stand to gain, or lose, by inaction. When I used these questions to contemplate a very big, scary change in my life, it helped me see that I couldn’t bear the thought of doing nothing. Although the fear of the change was huge as well, realizing that inaction was worse allowed me to slowly take the steps I needed to make the change.
