A Holistic guide to personal goal setting-PART 2.
As a Holistic Life Coach and Astrologer, I look at my client’s life as a “HOLISTIC CIRCLE”, which encompasses various Life categories. Measuring the current satisfaction of each area of your life is vital to pinpointing where you need to put your focus. The word “holistic” indicates a whole mind and body approach. The idea here is aligning your values with what you think and how you feel. If you set goals that are opposed to your values, you are setting yourself up for failure and an overall sense of dissatisfaction.
I noted in Part 1 of my goal-setting guide, that motivation is a big part of gaining momentum for your future.Set your G.O.A.L.S.
Let’s use the word GOALS as an acronym for giving some concentration to what you want to achieve. Motivation is different for everyone; for some, it comes from inside, others manifest more of an extroverted mode in getting excited to meet their objectives.
G-stands for Get started. Sometimes it is really difficult to get moving in your life. Maybe you suffered a tough job loss, lost money in your investments, or are enduring family issues. We all go through tough times. The key here is KISS-keep it simple stupid. Start saying out loud, any actions that come to mind. Think of action-oriented verbs: run, finish, produce, create, etc…as opposed to “to-be” (am, will be) verb. You want to feel action and movement in the text of your future objectives. This will help energize you, rather than just creating passive “hopeful” endeavors.
O-stands for Organize. You want to be as organized as you can when creating new action steps. You will need to measure your steps. Ask yourself; does what I am creating make reasonable common sense for me? You want to determine if you can reach a particular goal, or if you are just shooting too high. Think of your resources: personal, financial, time, etc…
A-stands for Align. What you value and cherish in your life will give you clues where to start. Do you have mostly personal, private goals? Do you have more public, career oriented goals? Are you a strongly spiritual or religious person? You should write down your top priorities in life that reflect your sense of values. When you bring into line what matters most to you; pace will be your friend. You will be naturally motivated.
L-stands for do what you LOVE. Most likely, you have heard-do what you love and the money will follow. For some of you this may seem unrealistic. We all have bills that must be paid now, not later. However, in the long run, choosing a life path that involves your passions will almost definitely keep you on track; you will stick to your objectives like glue.
As a Life Coach, I ask my clients probing questions to determine what they really “love” to do with their time and energy.
S-stands for Scrutiny. Continue to examine if your action steps are vibing with what is important to you. Hopefully at this point in the self-development process, you have created your lofty goals for your bright future. You need a system to review and analyze your progress. A Life Coach can help you be accountable to yourself and bring sustainable results. Also, as you scrutinize your steps, it forces you to face what you want to discard; and what requires more intense attention.
