A Holistic guide to personal goal setting-PART 1.
As a Holistic Life Coach and Astrologer, I look at my client’s life as a “HOLISTIC CIRCLE”, which encompasses various life categories. Measuring the current satisfaction of each area of your life is vital to pinpointing where you need to put your focus. Some of us may feel as if we are just going with the flow and not really getting ahead. We are producing, but not engaging in being a creator of what we really want.
Goal setting is a potent process that helps you turn your future vision into a reality. Having a clear idea of where you want to go is the key; then you know the correct path to travel on your journey.
Why should you set precise goals?
All levels of people use focused goal-setting techniques: executives, athletes, motivational speakers, etc…The biggest part of setting goals is motivation. Setting reasonable short-term and long-term objectives can increase the impetus to achieve and gain momentum in your life. Consolidating your time can help you not spend time on distracting activities. Knowing your specific goals forces you to look at what resources you already have to reach them; also, you should make a list of the resources you may need to acquire. Setting priorities properly will help you know how to allocate your time.
Grappling with your objectives
Firstly, you want to see the “big picture” of your life. Where you do you see yourself in 6 months? 1 year?, 5 years? Take stock of how satisfied you are in your current life right now. Think of your picture as a “pie”, that encompasses various slices (areas) of your life. Identify your biggest and most ambitious goals here and write them down. Use a journal if needed to capture your long-term goals.
Break down your “large” goals into smaller tasks and objectives that are more manageable for you. Set reasonable deadlines for these tinier tasks, and do your best to stick with your timeline. Once you have formulated your plan, begin working on the bullets that will go towards your grand 1, 5 or even 10 year scheme. When you being to look at what you need to do in small increments, it will be less likely to overwhelm you.
If you say to yourself, “I want to be CEO of Dunkin’ Donuts in 5 years and only concentrate on that, you will immediately be overloaded and held back. Also, ask yourself are my goals realistic, given my resources and time?
Identify what categories your goals fall in
*2 major categories
Personal Life-do you want to get married? Do you want to strengthen your existing marriage or relationship? Do you want to have kids? Do you want to lose weight, or become more spiritually aware? We all have goals that are personal to us; we should strive to work on what will develop us from the inside out.
Work/Career-This is a big one. For those of us that are between 21 and 50, let’s say; transitioning and changing careers will be common in our lifetime. A Life Coach can be the perfect solution for unbiased and clear guidance and support. Family members and friends cannot truly deliver 100% impartial advice; they are emotionally invested in you.
