Today I'm Grateful For

Today, what are you grateful for? Being happy does not create gratefulness; being grateful creates happiness. If you want to be happy, be grateful!
This past week I discovered a new Facebook page: “Today I’m GRATEFUL for…”. I’ve scanned days of posts and read an amazing range of things for which people are grateful. Here are just a smattering of them: rain, hope, kitten snuggles, family, bicycles, life, love, hiking trails and showing kindness.
While all Facebook pages tell us something about the public selves of their owners, this page seems more like a window into souls. The items posted on “Today I’m Grateful” may not be much different than what gets posted on each individual Facebook page; however what is is revealed here, I think, are some of the deepest values of each poster.
When someone says they are grateful for hope, I wonder if they have been living in despair and have now found something to hope for, or if they have discovered how to live grounded in hope.
Being grateful for kitten snuggles or dog slurps or even for family points to the value of relationships, the need to touch and be touched, the value of loving and being loved.
These days, I am grateful mostly for the ability to be grateful. I have not always been able to recognize all I have been given; and certainly I had not been able to be grateful for much of it. I am really thankful for the ability to be grateful!
Today, what are you grateful for?
